👮♂️🤝Today, officers from the City Centre Neighbourhood Team (C Relief) joined forces with partners from Manchester City Council, the Rough Sleepers Team, volunteers, and Op Sceptre for a day of action targeting anti-social behaviour and crime in Manchester city centre.
The operation focused on the Chinatown and Piccadilly Basin areas, where concerns around drug use, drug dealing, street drinking and general ASB have been affecting the local community and businesses.
🔍Throughout the day, officers and partners carried out high-visibility patrols, weapon sweeps, drug searches in bushes and hidden areas, and environmental clean-up work to improve public spaces for everyone. Specialist support was also provided by Op Sceptre and the Underwater Search & Marine Unit, who conducted knife sweep activity in the canal area around Piccadilly Basin.
Neighbourhood officers also carried out stop searches and issued several Community Protection Warnings (CPWs), formal warnings used to tackle ongoing anti-social behaviour and help prevent repeat offending. Work is also ongoing to secure Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs), which can ban persistent offenders from entering areas of the city centre and place strict conditions on their behaviour.
✅As a result of today’s activity, four people were arrested for a mixture of public order and drug-related offences in Manchester city centre.
Sergeant Hare, from the City Centre Neighbourhood Team said:
“This was a fantastic joint effort between police, council partners, volunteers and specialist teams all working together with one clear aim, making Manchester city centre safer and cleaner for the public, residents and businesses. Our neighbourhood officers work incredibly hard behind the scenes every day tackling anti-social behaviour, drug issues and repeat offenders, and today showed the positive impact partnership working can have within our communities.” Inspector Allpress added:
“Operations like this are extremely important in disrupting criminality, reassuring the public and supporting vulnerable people within the city centre. We will continue to work closely with our partners and use all available powers to target those responsible for persistent anti-social behaviour and crime.”
