Last Few Days to Have Your Say on Proposed changes to penalties for motoring offences |
||
|
Hello Residents;
Just a quick reminder that there is only a few days left for you to give your feedback through the Government consultation on proposed changes to penalties for motoring offences. The consultation period began on 7th January 2026 and will run until 11th May 2026.
We know from the feedback many of you provide at drop-in sessions, PACT meetings, online or in general conversation that many of you feel strongly about Roads Policing and Road Safety.
The road safey and roads policing is a key talking point at many meetings with partner agencies and a key concern in most communities. HM Government is currently running a consultation seeking views on changes to current motoring offences and the potential introduction of other, or new, offences. This could potentially address some of the concerns you regularly raise as well as changing penalties for existing offences – another matter that is regularly raised, and is a real opportunity to have your say at the law making stage.
This is a consultation that seeks views from all road users – this doesn’t just mean drivers of motor vehicles, but includes pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, anyone who has contact with the highway. I would estimate that the questionnaire takes around 15mins to complete online.
The consultation is structured into 4 sections and seeks views on changes to the existing motoring offences and the potential introduction of other offences, including:
• Drink and drug driving • Seat belt usage • Failure to stop and report • Driving unlicensed • Driving without a current MOT • Driving without motor insurance • Use of illegal number plates, including ‘ghost’ number plates
This is your opportunity to get involved and give your thoughts on changes to legislation that Police forces will then put to use on our roads and streets.
Please note this is NOT a Greater Manchester Police consultation but a national consultation. You can find more information about the consultation by following the following link -
