On Sunday 22 February, officers from CoM neighbourhood policing teams, alongside the Force Intelligence Bureau, Roads Policing Motorcycle Unit, Northwest Regional Organised Crime Unit and Immigration Compliance and Enforcement officers, were out in force in Manchester city targeting individuals who exploit the gig economy. The aim of the operation is to show a high-visibility presence, identifying those working illegally in the gig economy, as well as those using illegally modified e-bikes. During the day, over 41 e-bike riders were stopped, with 11 illegal e-bikes seized for destruction.
Sgt Jack Lenihan Smith added: “What was particularly encouraging about Sunday’s operation was an increase in the amount of legal E Bikes now being used within Manchester City Centre with riders complying with the EAPC laws.
"We also had a continued positive engagement with members of the public throughout the, day expressing their appreciation for our proactive approach to addressing what they described as a growing problem that has been impacting their quality of life and sense of safety in the city centre.
“We are committed to maintaining regular high-visibility patrols in the city centre and will continue to work closely with all our partners to ensure that those operating within the gig economy do so legally and responsibly if not they will be dealt with effectively and those riding in an anti-social manner met the full force of the law.”
