I would like to extend my thanks to the Rochdale East Neighbourhood Policing Team for their ongoing efforts in addressing the issues of begging in our community. The officers are working tirelessly to prevent this offence whilst collaborating with partner agencies such as RMBC, Adult Care and housing associations to provide support for those who find themselves in difficult circumstances.
A persistent beggar in the Rochdale area was issued a Community Behavioural Order (CBO) from Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday 27th January 2025 after failing to work with the police and our partners. This is work I am extremely proud of and the officers have worked hard to obtain this.
It is important to remember that begging often fuels organised crime groups and can led to other offences, such as drug related crime. This is why tackling the issue is essential, not just for the safety and wellbeing of our community, but also to support those individuals who need help breaking the cycle.
We take pride in our town and we do not want the first impression of Rochdale to be of someone begging in the streets or central reservation of the highway. This is dangerous, not only to those engaging in this activity but also to road users.
For those wishing to help, we encourage you to donate to charities and organisations which are dedicated to supporting those who feel the need to beg. This can make a more effective difference without unintentionally supporting unsafe or exploitative situations.
Thank you for continued support.
