Off Road Bikes

Dear Residents,

Your Local Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently working to address the issue of Off Road Motorbikes and Quad bikes, being used by youths/adults within the Greater Manchester Area, causing significant impact on local residents.

In an attempt to target these offenders, the local neighbourhood policing teams are working very closely with GMPS Off Road Bike unit, local Council and local housing providers, as part of this we would like to ask for your cooperation in stopping the illegal use of these bikes on public roads and in public places.

Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated and mean that the local area is safer for the local community.

Officers across Greater Manchester have been handed a new device that will help them identify anti-social behaviour (ASB) offenders.

The new device which will come into force immediately, will support officers who are working across our dedicated operation dealing with ASB on motorbikes, e-bikes and quadbikes.

SmartTag, a special, traceable forensic spray developed by DeterTeck UK, allows our officers to ‘tag’ an offender and their bike with a water-based marking solution.

The solution has a unique forensic code relating to the pressurised cannister it was sprayed from, which will help to link a suspect and vehicle to the scene of the offence.

This will be done by officers using a UV light to scan the offender’s clothing and bike which will highlight the bright yellow solution to show that they have been tagged.

“We are continuing with our commitment to dealing with ASB riders across Greater Manchester"

“Our work with the Smart Water Group has been ongoing and we are delighted to be able to get these cannister delivered and out in operation across the force immediately.

“This device will hopefully act as a deterrent to those participating in anti-social behaviour on motorbikes, e-bikes and quadbikes as they now know that they will be sprayed with a solution that will link them back to the scene of the crime.”

“That is our aim, we will mark these bikes and further down the line when we come across them, we can tag them to those previous incidents, take them forward to prosecution and to get the message across to the public that we are doing something about this issue.”

Director of Security and Risk from DeterTech UK, Gary Higgins said: “DeterTech are delighted to be supporting GMP, using our forensic marking product, SmartTag.

“Each canister contains a unique forensic SmartWater solution that categorically links offenders and property to the scene of a crime. SmartWater has a 100 per cent conviction rate in contested Court cases.”

If you know who is using motorcycles anti-socially or to commit crime or know where these bikes are being stored, please let us know. Report online or call Greater Manchester Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
